Like you said, It's a good idea to drive without Fanaleds for a while, and then compare the results with Fanaleds turned on.

Is it a retail or steam version (or pirated)?

In theory Fanaleds shouldn't be able to make the game crash because it only 'listens' to what the game outputs, but you never know...
